For me, IUCN is the girl that got away: The one that sporadically springs up in my mind when I’m glancing out of café windows or stuck in front of an eternal traffic light. With all the grudges and resentment I can feel towards those who shunned me, and boy did that job rejection hurt, for some reason, whilst the very name of IUCN makes my gut churn in longing, I simultaneously wish that they are doing well.

It may be a bit of a yobbish brand, for sure. Take a look around you, and who do you see wearing Lacoste who isn’t your dad, or rich kids sporting polo shirts to their local tennis club? But Lacoste have been changing their target audience for a while now, trying to attract a newer more active audience. Not only that, they seem to be creating campaigns that are putting them on the spotlight with regards to sustainability and conservation.

As of this year, Lacoste has confirmed that they will support the International Union for the Conservation of Nature- IUCN’s “Save Our Species” programme, to help fight the grave crisis the world is facing with animal extinction. With Paris Fashion Week 2018 as its launching pad, Lacoste have created 10 limited edition polo shirts, where their iconic crocodile has given way to ten threatened species who will now emblaze the brand’s shirts. The number of new shirts with the endangered reptiles, birds and mammals will be restricted to the corresponding number of the species that remain in the world. Don’t you wish there were more? At 150 dollars, truth be told, they are quite expensive, but the initiative is wonderful and will help raise awareness on some of the world’s most beautiful animals that are sadly in serious risk of extinction, as well as giving IUCN some much needed publicity.
